My Experience Exploring Fortnite’s Social World

    What game did you play? I played Fortnite, the hugely popular online game developed by Epic Games.

What game genre does your game fall into? Fortnite primary falls into the Battle Royale and Survival/Action genre, while also incorporating sandbox and social hub elements through its Creative mode.

Research this game online and describe its community of players. Who plays this type of game? According to research from Business of Apps, Fortnite boasts over 500 million registered accounts globally. Its player base is largely composed of Gen Z and younger demographics, with a massive concentration of players aged 18 to 24. It attracts casual players, competitive esports athletes, and creators due to its cross-platform accessibility and constantly evolving pop-culture crossovers.

Where did you play the game (mobile or computer or game platform)? I played on my gaming PC to enjoy high graphics and smooth framerate.

 

How many times did you play? I played approximately five matches during my session for this project.

Describe what you did/did not like about the game. I really enjoyed the fast-paced gameplay, dynamic movement mechanics, and colorful art style. The building and tactical combat mechanics keep every match unpredictable. However, I find that since Fortnite's audience has improved over the years, it can be annoying when playing casually and coming across a player who is trying overly hard to eliminate my character. It can make the game frustrating and unenjoyable at times. 

Are you a regular player? Yes, I play regularly and enjoy hopping on during new season updates.

Will you play again? Definitely! I plan to keep playing with friends whenever new events or battle passes drop.

What social media aspects are woven into the game you played? Fortnite functions almost as its own social network. Epic Games directly integrates social platforms by allowing players to link their social accounts for cross-platform friend lists. A specific example of social media integration is Fortnite's in-game live concerts and events (like collaborations with major musical artists), which are broadcasted live across Twitch and YouTube while allowing players to interact in real-time using in-game emotes.
